This is a memorial blog to praise achievements of Dr. Willis Norton Whitney,  the founder of Akasaka Hospital, Tokyo.

Who was he?
  • born at Newark, New Jersey, USA, 18th October 1854 (not 1855*).
  • son of William Cogswell Whitney (1825-1882), bookkeeping teacher.
  • son of Anna Lavina Whitney,  née Mockridge. 
  • elder brother of Clara A. Whitney, wife of KAJI Stephen Umetaro.
  • elder brother of Adelaide Norton Whitney, wife of Rev. David Marshall Lang of C. M. S.
  • husband of Mary Caroline Braithwaite, of an English old Quaker family. 
  • studied at Collegiate and Commercial Institute (later Russell Military Academy), New Haven, Connecticut. 
  • lived in Japan 1875 to 1911 (sometimes absent).
  • Doctor of Medicine and Ophthalmic Surgeon (1881 Pennsylvania University; M.R.C.S., Eng., 1904; L.R.C.P., London Hospital).
  • Interpreter, at the American Legation in Tokyo, 1883 to 1895.
  • founded Akasaka Hospital, 1886 (closed 1927).
  • became a member of Baltimore Yearly Meeting, USA, 1889.
  • recorded as a minister of Baltimore Yearly Meeting, USA, from 1902.
  • died at Banbury, Oxfordshire, England, 26th October 1918, aged 63.
* There are papers showing that he was born not in 1855, but 1854.

Information about Dr W. N. Whitney is rather limited and not very accessible now. I hope that this blog will be helpful to those who are interested in this missionary doctor,  worked independently.
